Air Nostrum reserves ten Airlander aircraft with seats.
UK's Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) has announced an aircraft booking agreement with one of Europe's largest regional airlines, Air Nostrum Group, for the supply of a small fleet of HAV's pioneering hybrid aircraft, Airlander , for fly on Spanish routes. The partnership sees Air Nostrum Group reserving ten -seat Airlander aircraft for delivery from , with a view to commencing operations as a launch airline.
HAV, which developed the Airlander at Cardington airfield in Bedfordshire, plans to launch production of the aircraft in South Yorkshire, UK, this year. It said Airlander would reduce flight emissions by up to % for travel on Air Nostrum's regional routes in Spain.
The helium-filled airship with twin linked hulls is rated to carry a total payload of tons. The Airlander's four engines are currently combustion engines that burn jet fuel, but by HAV plans to run a hybrid-electric configuration. This will provide a % reduction in emissions relative to other aircraft in mobility and logistics applications while offering operational flexibility in the s C Level Executive List ervice. The company also plans to go all-electric by , giving future customers the option of a zero-emission aircraft.
The latest booking agreement follows six months of rigorous studies and modeling carried out by Air Nostrum Group and HAV on the operation of the Airlander on Spanish national aviation routes and the associated economy. The Airlander aircraft are expected to diversify and complement Air Nostrum Group's existing fleet of aircraft currently operating on these routes, carrying passengers and producing only around a tenth of the harmful emissions.
“We are exploring any and all possible ways to reduce our carbon footprint. This is something we have been doing for many years. The Airlander will drastically reduce emissions, and that is why we have made this agreement with HAV,” said Carlos Bertomeu, president of Air Nostrum. “Sustainability, which is good news for everyone, is already a non-negotiable fact in the daily operations of commercial aviation. Agreements like these are a very effective way to achieve the decarbonization objectives contemplated in the Fit for legislative initiative.
